Acacia Senegal vs Acacia Seyal: What Buyers Should Specify

Gum arabic crystals and powders

Hashab and Talha are not interchangeable names for the same material — they are two distinct Acacia species with different origin, appearance and functional behaviour.

Botanical Origin

Hashab comes from Acacia senegal, long regarded as the reference species for gum arabic in food and beverage applications. Talha comes from Acacia seyal, harvested and traded as a separate commercial stream with its own typical characteristics and price position.

What This Means for Formulation

Species selection affects solution behaviour, colour and how the material performs in your specific process. Neither species is universally “better” — the right choice depends on your application and the acceptance criteria already validated in your formula.

Always request species-specific documentation — a generic “gum arabic” certificate does not confirm which Acacia species you are buying.

Specification Checklist

  • Confirm botanical species by name on every purchase order
  • Request species-matched TDS and COA, not a generic gum arabic sheet
  • Validate both species in trial batches before committing to one
  • Re-confirm species on every reorder, especially with new suppliers
